What is generative engine optimisation (GEO), and does a financial services brand need it?

The short answer

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the work of making content easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to find, understand and cite, so a brand appears inside their answers. A financial services brand needs it if its buyers ask AI tools which provider to choose. SkyParlour's AI and GEO services write and structure content for both search results and AI answers.

GEO in plain words

Search is no longer just a results page. A growing share of questions get answered directly by AI tools, which read the web, summarise what they find and name the companies they trust.

SEO aims for a place in the search results. GEO aims for a mention inside the AI-generated answer. Clear, well-structured, well-cited content helps both.

Page one of the results is not the same as the answer.

Why it matters in financial services

Buyers of financial products and services research carefully, and trust decides who they choose. When an assistant summarises the options, the providers it names start ahead, and the ones it leaves out may never be considered.

Accuracy matters too. An assistant repeating an out-of-date fact about your product, pricing or regulatory status can do real harm, so what it reads about you needs to be clear and current.

What GEO work includes

01

Clear, well-structured content

Writing that is easy for both readers and AI systems to parse and cite accurately.

02

Keyword and topic research

Understanding what your audience is actually asking, in search and in AI tools.

03

Technical foundations

Making sure content is structured in ways search engines and AI crawlers can read.

04

Ongoing monitoring

Tracking how a brand shows up, or does not, in AI-generated answers as this space moves.

An honest note

GEO is a newer discipline than the rest of our work, and there is no fixed playbook for it yet, for us or anyone else. What we do is grounded in what is known to work for search, applied carefully to how AI systems currently source and cite information.

Questions people also ask

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. They overlap, and most of what helps a page rank also helps an assistant understand and cite it. GEO adds a focus on clear answers, structure and the outside sources assistants trust.

Does a regulated firm need to take extra care?

Yes. Anything you publish for search or AI answers should go through the same accuracy and compliance checks as the rest of your marketing, because an assistant may repeat it closely.

What other names does GEO go by?

You will also see AEO (answer engine optimisation), AIO (AI optimisation) and generative search optimisation. They describe the same shift.
